Everyday Life @ Lilly My Cat

Hello my dear friends.  I hope that you had a wonderful holiday weekend and are home safe if you traveled.  All is well here in Southern California with our gray skies (which I love).  I thought I would share something a little different today.  I read a lot of blogs and I'm always impressed with the beautiful homescapes people share.  But, there's never any papers, desk clutter, or cleaning items.  I love watching Venetia in Kyoto.  She's a British lady who lives an idyllic lifestyle in Japan.  She shares her lovely garden and unique kitchen but where are her papers?  Doesn't she get bills, need a computer, garbage can, etc.  It's never shown.  So, today I thought I'd share with you  a glimpse into my daily schedule/routine.

Sometimes I wake up early in the morning.  When that happens I sit and read a bit before going downstairs and starting my work. (I really don't "work" anymore.  I used to work outside the home and raised two dear children.  Now, I don't know how I would handle it)... First I switch off the outside lights..

Next stop is the laundry room or I should say "Lilly's Room".  Lilly is a big, hungry kitty.  She could eat all day long if you let her.  About 9 years ago, we purchased this automatic feeder for her (shown uncovered).  Magically, two times a day food appears for Lilly and is she ever happy.  Each morning I clean her litter box (no picture needed), fill her water bowl and her feeder.....

Next up is her water bowl in the kitchen.  She also has a little food dish she eats her "lunch" out of each day.....

Monday is my day to do laundry (I never use that word "laundry" as I call it washing).  I don't have the luxury to have a clothes line (due to crazy covenants).  But, I do remember as a child getting the clothes off the line and the heavenly scent of freshly dried laundry.  I might add that I have this habit of getting the clothes out of the dryer the minute the dryer buzzes.  Then of course I have to fold them and put them away before starting my next chore.....

On Tuesdays I iron.  I've always ironed on Tuesday for over 35 years.  Isn't that odd?  I even iron my pillow cases and the tops of my bed sheets.....

Here is a picture of my most favorite possession.  I couldn't live without my vacuum.  It's not that I love to vacuum but I cannot stand to see "stuff" on my floors.  I still "mop" my tile floors on my hands and knees with a bucket and cloth.  You may ask why I don't have a housekeeper.  Good question...probably because she wouldn't clean it like I want.  It's a bit crazy isn't it?......

On Thursdays I wash the sheets and clean the bathrooms.  And I'm always taking out the garbage, watering my plants and doing whatever else is needed.  But one task that I no longer have any patience for is paperwork.  You may ask why so many papers?  Well, my husband loves to invest in real estate (no, he's not a realtor, he's an agricultural consultant). But where my hobby is dishes, yarn, handbags, etc., his hobby is collecting real estate.  Luckily, we are in the process of selling some of these investments which will be a blessing.  I can hardly wait for the day (if it will ever come), when I have no properties except our residence.....

It's funny how people get set in their ways.  I look back now and I've always been a routine person.  I have my schedule and that's how I function.  It's not that I love this scheduled way of life but that's me.  I can't do something for fun (like knitting) if my work isn't completed.  Sometimes I wish I could change but I do get satisfaction taking care of my home.  And, I might add that I do not like change.  I like the feeling of contentment.

Speaking of home, I received this lovely book Heart of the Home from my friend  Cathy at Morning Musings. This beautiful book is by Susan Branch.  I feel to fortunate that I was the winner of this giveaway!

I hope I haven't bored you with my weekly chores.  Wherever you are this week, I wish you the very best.  And, it's always a joy to hear from you.  Until next time,

take care,

Pat

  1. I think chores are chores wherever and however you live. I think a routine is somehow reassuring. Day to day life, familiarity, the satisfaction of a home well run. You seem to have it off to a fine art. I'm still working on it. X

  2. A peek into your week! Thanks for sharing! I'm a routine kind of person too! I have just 3 minutes to leave a comment...before I wake my son and get him off to school. My day starts at 5am, when I make lunch and coffee for my husband and send him to work then tend our animals (dogs, cat, ducks and chickens) then computer time...I like to stay on a schedule, but I'm not inflexible or stress (much) if it's interrupted. There is something to be said about "the usual", isn't there?

    1. Hi Jessy, yes, how right you are! I remember the days when I used to wake up my son for school (my daughter was always on time). Great memories. When I go on vacation, I don't have a schedule and sometimes I'm at a loss on what to do. Thank you so much for stopping by. I wish you a wonderful day.

  3. I suspect that your chores are much like all of ours are - well, perhaps not the husbands paper work! I imagine that your bloggy friend in Japan just shoves all the paperwork and so on out of sight when she takes photos. I have been known to do that. It isn't that I pretend it doesn't exist it is just that I figure that readers know what mess looks like and don't need to see mine!! Your home is beautifully kept, you are obviously a great homemaker!! xx

  6. How lovely to have won a book! It looks like a lovely one too! I'm so impressed with your routines and your beautifully tidy house. I have to let you into a secret and tell you that the reason there is never any mess in my blog photos is because I sweep it all out of the way of the picture - it's not that it's not there at all! Ahh, I feel so very calm just reading your post! xx

  8. I'm always interested in learning how people organise their days and lives, so thank you for that. Our house is relatively cluttered, although I have a large "inbox" inside a cupboard where most of the paperwork lives. At the moment, I have four piles of paperwork nearby where I'm sitting at the computer. On the floor, urgent papers to do with settling my Dad's estate; on my left, a project that I am typing up here at the computer; on the printer, a garden catalogue to remind me to research an iris; on the little chest next to the printer, a stack of Easter and Christmas cards that I want to reply to when I get time. Oh and there are also two lovely watercolours there, of a morning glory and a violet! There is also my husband's "inbox" on the windowsill on the other side of the room. I know some people must think our house is very cluttered, but to be honest when I go inside a house that is surgically clear, it makes me jittery. I think it also depends on how much room you have. Our house has two smallish rooms downstairs, and three bedrooms upstairs, so there isn't a huge amount of room for Life. As for housework, when we became parents nearly 20 years ago, we began cleaning the entire house on Saturday mornings, dividing up the tasks. We still basically follow that general pattern, except that laundry and ironing gets woven into all the days of the week. And my darling husband loves to iron while watching tv! We would never want to hire someone to clean for us. It's something we actually find satisfying to do, and as you say, we do it the way we like!

    1. Hi Christine, I so enjoyed reading your comment as now I feel my "house" is somewhat normal with lots of papers. And, I agree that it is satisfying taking care of the home myself (along with my husband's help :)....A couple of years ago a friend had a beautiful desk for sale. I wasn't interested in it at that time but oh how I wish I had it so that everything could be in it's place. I'm going to try and redecorate our family room so that it's a bit more viewer friendly. Wish me luck. I hope you're having a good week. My best to you and your family. Hugs, Pat
